In 2010, Vladamir Kush’s painting inspired me to write a song called, I Am a Candle. I couldn’t find a melody that I liked so it took me a while to create a sketch that worked.
I keep imagining our animators – Tigrelab – bringing this painting to life in my new show It’s All a Beautiful Noise (IAABN)! Wowie zowie!! Vladimir gave me permission to use his painting in a show that same year.
It wouldn’t be until sitting at a piano in 2013 that an melody really spoke to me. Some times it takes a bit of time for inspiration to find its way. Below is a raw recording of Joby and myself at the piano. I’m showing Joby the chords and the musical threads I am following as we get a loose structure for the song down.

November 2019
We are finally able to carve out sometime to record four new songs for IAABN. As I was working on the script for the new show, I realised we needed a few more songs to complete the visual and emotional journey.
Writing and creating in the studio is a raw emotional journey. We never seem to have trouble finding our way. I’m back with Joby at the end of Feb 2020.
February 2020 Update
I arrived back at Joby’s studio in Victoria and boom – we nail down the magnificent intro I am a Candle. Enjoy!
The intro to the song makes me cry – tears of joy – every time! The animators are going to have so much fun with this piece of music. I could not be happier with the way I Am a Candle is turning out.

Since the initial piano sketch I did with Joby I’ve been inundated with visions of traveling to Mali to record women singers. So guess what? We carved out time and made plans to travel to West Africa in May 2020.
March 2020 Update – Covid World Lockdown
No traveling out of Australia – traveling to Mali or Canada is now impossible. I head to the NT also referred to as the Top End – to hang out with the Binjari people just outside Katherine. Whilst there for several months, I start to hear about some singer in Alice Springs. I guess we will see what unfolds… watch this space πηγή του άρθρου.
